INFORMAZIONI STORICHE

Nel programma di costruzione di quattro motocisterne per l’avvio di una flotta moderna, che coincise con l’inizio della seconda guerra mondiale, il regime di quel tempo decise di assegnare nomi di medaglie al valore e così furono varate nel 1939 le navi FRANCO MARTELLI e IRIDIO MANTOVANI , nel 1940 la nave GIULIO GIORDANI e nel 1942 la nave SERGIO LAGHI. Il 14.02.1943 fu requisita dalla Regia Marina.
Il 02.10.1941 fu requisita dalla Regia Marina a Porto Marghera .
In navigazione da Taranto a Tripoli, con un carico di 7.400 t di carburante, alle ore 21.40 del 17 novembre 1942, nel punto 32°58'N, 15°38'E (nord-nord-est di Misurata), fu colpita ed immobilizzata da un siluro del sommergibile britannico
PORPOISE . Dopo cinque minuti, alle ore 22.00, un secondo siluro fece scoppiare l'incendio a bordo.
Alle ore 08.00 del mattino del 18 il relitto era ancora in fiamme sul mare.
