INFORMAZIONI STORICHE
Nel programma di costruzione di quattro motocisterne per l’avvio di una flotta moderna, che coincise con l’inizio della seconda guerra mondiale, il regime di quel tempo decise di assegnare nomi di medaglie al valore e così furono varate nel 1939 le navi FRANCO MARTELLI e IRIDIO MANTOVANI , nel 1940 la nave GIULIO GIORDANI e nel 1942 la nave SERGIO LAGHI. Il 14.02.1943 fu requisita dalla Regia Marina.
Dal 28.11.1940 al 09.01.1941 e dal 1.11.1941 al 01.12.1941 fu requisita dalla Regia Marina. Il 01.12.1941 mentre era in navigazione per Tripoli fu arraccata da aerei della RAF , mentre si tentava di rimorchiarla fu nuovamente attaccata, impossibilitata a muoversi fu quindi abbandonata, e poco dopo affondata a cannonate dalle navi nemiche nella posizione

From 11.28.1940 to 09.01.1941 and from 01.11.1941 to 01.12.1941 was requisitioned by the Royal Navy. The 01/12/1941 while sailing to Tripoli was arraccata by RAF aircraft, while trying to tow it was attacked again, unable to move was then abandoned, and soon sunk by gunfire from enemy ships.
