Il transatlantico Cristoforo Colombo,era il gemello dell'Andrea Doria. Fu costruito nei cantieri Ansaldo, di Genova commissionato dalla Italian Line (cioè l’Italia, Soc. di Navigazione) .Il varo avvenne nel 1953. I suoi dati tecnici erano: 29.191 tonnellate di stazza, lunghezza 216,6 metri, larghezza di 27,9 metri, e navigava ad una velocità di crociera di 23 nodi.
Poteva ospitare 1.055 persone.IL Colombo inizio al suo viaggio inaugurale, da Genova a New York, il 15 luglio 1954. Rimase sulla linea Italia-Nord America fino al 1973, in seguito sostituì il Giulio Cesare nel servizio Trieste-Sud America.Nel 1964 Trasportò la pietà di Michelagelo da Napoli a New York Dal 1977 al 1981 , fu utilizzato come una nave-hotel in Venezuela dopodichè fu portato in disarmo.Infine divenne nuovamente nave- hotel ad Hong Kong fino al 1983 poi fu mandato a Formosa dove, nel 1983 fu disarmato e demolito a Kaohsiung Taiwan.
