Informazioni storiche: Questa nave fu varata il 22 agosto 1914 nell' arsenale di Newport, in Virginia,per conto della Mallory Steamship e venne battezzata col nome " MEDINA", con una stazza lorda di 5.426 tonnellate . Costruita come nave da carico fu adibita al trasporto di frutta e verdura da Galveston, in Texas, a New York. La nave per trent' anni effettua questo servizio passando indenne due guerre mondiali e macinando milioni di miglia lungo la costa americana. Nel 1949,viene acquistata dalla panamense Cia San Miguel, e viene sottoposta a lavori di ampliamento e trasformazione in nave da passeggeri che lo portano a quasi settemila tonnellate di stazza, e viene rinominata ROMA. La missione è specifica, trasportare nel 1950 gli italiani immigrati in Australia a Roma, per l' Anno Santo. Durante questo servizio viene notata dai Costa che la acquistano nel 1952, e la rinominano FRANCA C.. Sono gli anni d' oro della nave, nonostante si avvicini alla quarantina e quasi tutte le sue coetanee si siano già ritirate da un pezzo. La nave viene sottoposta a un robusto lavoro di restyling e diventa una nave da crociera "di lusso di prima classe", come si usava dire a quei tempi, con un motore nuovo di zecca, un diesel Fiat a bassa velocità, poi sostituito nel '70 da un altro Fiat diesel a media velocità e che ancora spinge la nave nelle sue traversate. Con l'avvento delle moderne navi da crociera la Costa crociere decide di venderla, e viene acquistata da una organizzazione di beneficenza registrata in Germania, la " GUTE BUECHER FUER " che la ribattezza "DOULOS", nome greco che significa servitore e che finora ha portato la parola di questa associazione religiosa già in novanta paesi del mondo. Oggi questa nave è una biblioteca galleggiante (naturalmente la più grande al mondo) animata da un colorato mondo di personaggi dello spettacolo e della cultura uniti da una comune missione religiosa.
