Progettato Generale Masdea su indirizzo dell'Ispettore del Genio Navale Benedetto Brin, risultò un'eccellente unità sia per progetto sia per costruzione. Esemplari della stessa classe furono acquistate da diverse marine straniere.
Operò efficacemente durante la guerra italo-turca nelle acque della Libia, dell'Egeo e del Levante. Il 24 febbraio 1912, insieme alla gemella Francesco Ferruccio, affondò la cannoniera turca Avnillah al largo di Beirut.
Venne poi affondato il 18 luglio 1915, poco dopo dell'entrata dell'Italia in guerra, dal sommergibile austriaco U.4, mentre era impegnato nel bombardamento della ferrovia Ragusa-Cattaro.

Designed Masdea General address of the Inspector of Naval Engineers Benedetto Brin, it turned out to be an excellent unit for project and construction. Specimens of the same class were acquired by several foreign navies.
He worked effectively during the Italo-Turkish war in the waters of Libya, the Aegean and the Levant. February 24, 1912, along with twin Francesco Ferruccio, sank the Turkish gunboat Avnillah off Beirut.
It was later sunk July 18, 1915, shortly after the entry into the war, the Austrian submarine U.4, while engaged in the bombing of the railway Ragusa-Kotor.
