INFORMAZIONI STORICHE
L'impostazione dello scafo risale all'aprile del 1989 nei cantieri navali della Direction des Constructions Navales Services di Brest. Completata nel maggio 1994 , è stata la più grande nave da guerra costruita nell'Europa occidentale dopo la HMS Ark Royal (R09) nel 1950.
Il ponte di volo fu allungato prima dell'entrata in servizio per permettere l'atterraggio di aere di grandi dimensioni (tipo Grumman E2)
