Questa unità fu costruita per la caccia ai sommergibili nemici, (SSK Submarine Submarine Killer) era dotata di un nuovo sitema d'arma con siluro filoguidato a testa autocercante. In questo modo il siluro veviva guidato verso il bersaglio fino all'entrata del raggio di azione dei suoi sistemi di ricerca aumentandonotevolmante le probabilità di centrare il bersaglio.
E' il secondo sommergibile italiano ad avere questo nome. Il battello è stato dedicato al valoroso sommergibile omonimo che operò durante la seconda guerra mondiale affondando l’incrociatore britannico Calypso durante i primi giorni di guerra. Il Motto: "A montibus in imos una virtus" ("Dai monti alle profondità un solo valore"). Il sommergibile è stato consegnato ufficialmente alla Marina Militare il 10 giugno 1968, essendo comandante il capitano di corvetta Pietro Marcenaro. La Madrina al varo è stato la signora Lidia Marengo di Moribondo Sorvillo. La bandiera di combattimento gli è stata consegnata il 22 giugno 1969 a Venezia e gli è stata donata gruppo A.N.M.I. di Verbania. Il sommergibile è stato intensamente impiegato come unità addestrativa facendo parte del Secondo Gruppo Sommergibili avente sede ad Augusta. E’ stato messo in disarmo il 31 luglio 1990.
