INFORMAZIONI STORICHE
Questa nave appoggio incursori,apparteneva alla classe BARNEGATT, fu varata nel 1942 negli U.S.A.,(ex OYSTER BAY) come nave appoggio e motosiluranti ( MTB Tender - Moto Torpedo Boat Tender ) con quella bandiera partecipò alla seconda guerra mondiale.
Fu radiata dalla Marina USA il 1956, e acquisita dalla Marina Militare Italiana il 24.10.1957. Durante il servizio ha subito numerosi lavori di ammodernamento.
Ha partecipato alla ricerca e recupero delle salme del disastro aereo di Punta Raisi del 23.12.1978 nel quale un aereo dell'Alitalia proveniente da Roma Fiumicino in fase di atterraggio impattò sul mare spezzandosi in due. Nella tragedia perirono 108 persone e vi furono solo 21 spravvissuti. Per questo la nave fu insignita della medaglia coniata apposta per ricordare quell'incidente.

This support ship raiders BARNEGATT belonged to the class, was launched in 1942 in the U.S. (ex OYSTER BAY) as support ship and torpedo boats (MTB Tender - Motor Torpedo Boat Tender) with that flag took part in the Second World War.
It was decommissioned by the Navy in 1956 and acquired by the Italian Navy on 24.10.1957. During the service has undergone several modernization works.
He participated in the search and recovery of remains of the plane crash at Punta Raisi, 23.12.1978 in which an Alitalia flight from Rome Fiumicino crashed on landing on the sea split in two. 108 people perished in the tragedy and there were only 21 spravvissuti. This is why the ship was awarded the medal struck to commemorate the accident on purpose
