La S/S Città di Tripoli, fu costruita nel 1915 ad Ancona- Italia, apparteneva alla siciliana società Società di Navigazione Sicilia di Palermo. Nel 1926 fu acquistato dalla Compagnia Italiana Transatlantica ( CITRA ).
nel 1932 a seguito della fusione della CITRA con la compagnia di navigazione Florio nella Tirrenia Flotte Riunite Florio-CITRA, passa alla nuova compagnia.
Nel 1936 la Tirrenia Flotte Riunite diventa Società Anonima di Navigazione Tirrenia, con sede a Napoli.
Il 22 dicembre 1940 fu requisito a Napoli dalla Regia Marina, rimanendo nave mercantile fu impiegato principalmente come trasporto truppe in Mar Egeo.
La sera del 1° luglio 1941 il CITTA' DI TRIPOLI lasciò Porto Vathi, sull’isola di Samos, in convoglio con la motonave CITTA' DI SAVONA , con la scorta della torpediniera LIBRA. I due mercantili stavano tornando al Pireo dopo aver trasportato a Samos truppe assegnate alla guarnigione dell’isola (i primi reparti della Divisione «Cuneo», di cui era iniziato il trasferimento dalle Sporadi alle Cicladi).
Alle sei del mattino del 2 luglio un velivolo della Luftwaffe raggiunse il convoglio per fornirgli scorta antisommergibile. Né la LIBRA, ne l'aereo si accorsero della presenza del sommergibile inglese TORBAY al comando del capitano di corvetta Antohony Cecil Capel Miers.
Alle 7.22 (ora di bordo del Torbay, un’ora avanti rispetto all’orario italiano), a 4,5 miglia per 304° da Punta San Nicolò, il TORBAY lanciò tre siluri contro il mercantile di testa – il Città di Tripoli – da una distanza di 3000 metri, e due minuti dopo ne lanciò altri tre contro il mercantile di coda (la CITTA' DI SAVONA).
Fu l’aereo il primo ad avvistare le scie dei siluri, dandone subito segnalazione. Anche lo stesso CITTA' DI TRIPOLI avvistò le armi dirette contro di esso, ed iniziò un’accostata per tentare di evitarle, ma la manovra era appena cominciata quando il piroscafo fu colpito da un siluro a centro nave, sul lato di dritta. Erano le 6.23 (7.25 per l’orario del Torbay): la nave affondò nel punto 37°41’ N e 24°15’ E (o 37°42’ N e 24°16’ E), nel canale di Zea, a sud di Atene ed a nord di Zea.
Mentre la LIBRA si portava sulla presunta posizione del battello attaccante per bombardarlo con cariche di profondità (ne gettò 18 tra le 7.30 e le 8.40, ma nessuna esplose vicina al TORBAY ), la CITTA' DI SAVONA trasse in salvo 48 dei 59 membri dell’equipaggio del CITTA' DI TRIPOLI. I dispersi furono undici.
