Questa
unità fu costruita in america nei cantieri Tacoma di Seattle
per la US Navy, fu varata il 14.02.1944 ed era denominata USS St.
George (AV 16). Durante la prima missione partecipò al
salvataggio di un idrovolante Catalina precipitato in mare ma durante
la navigazione ricevuta la notizia che l'aereo era affondato, fu deviata
a Pearl Harbor. Dopo una sosta di quattro giorni il 22 ottobre 1944
partì per operare nel Pacifico centrale. Il 28 marzo 1945 raggiunse
le Ryukyu per dare supporto ai velivoli impegnati nella Battaglia
di Okinawa. Durante le operazioni di guerra, subì frequenti
attacchi aerei ed il 29 aprile i suoi cannonieri abbatterono un aereo
nemico.In seguito subì notevoli danni che la costrinsero a
rimanere ferma per lungo tempo, ciò nonostante rimase sul posto
come nave officina, utilizzando una chiatta munita di gru per il sollevamento
dei velivoli da riparare. In seguito lasciò le Ryukyu in un
Bacino galleggiante per essere riparata a Guam. Il 21 agosto ritornò
ad Okinawa, ed il 20 settembre raggiunse le coste del Giappone dove
i suoi velivoli furono utilizzati per la sorveglianza delle acque
giapponesi, servizio passeggeri, postale e di corriere tra Tokyo,
Sasebo e Okinawa. Il 12 febbraio 1946 partì per rientrare in
patria dove raggiunse San Diego il 25 marzo. Il 1º agosto del
1945 fu messa in riserva eeil 1º luglio 1963 fu radiata dal servizio.Nel
1968 fu acquistata dalla marina Militare Italiana per il trasporto
degli uomini del battaglione San Marco, in un primo momento fi definita
nave ausiliaria ( A5314 ) e poi divenne nave per il trasporto
truppe.

This
unit was built in America in the shipyards in Seattle Tacoma for the
U.S. Navy, was launched on 14.02.1944 and was named the USS St. George
(AV 16). During the first mission participated in the rescue of a
Catalina flying boat crashed into the sea during the voyage but received
the news that the plane had sunk, was diverted to Pearl Harbor. After
a break of four days October 22, 1944 started to operate in the central
Pacific. On March 28, 1945 reached the Ryukyu to give support to aircraft
engaged in the Battle of Okinawa. During military operations, and
suffered frequent air raids on April 29 its gunners shot down a plane
nemico.In later suffered significant damage that forced her to stand
still for a long time, nevertheless remained in place as a vessel,
using a barge equipped crane for lifting the aircraft to be repaired.
After he left the Ryukyu in a floating dock for repairs in Guam. On
21 August he returned to Okinawa, and on September 20 reached the
coast of Japan where its aircraft were used for surveillance of Japanese
waters, passenger service, postal and courier service between Tokyo,
Sasebo and Okinawa. On February 12, 1946 he went to return home where
he reached San Diego on March 25. On 1 August 1945 was placed in reserve
eeil July 1, 1963 was deleted from servizio.Nel 1968 was purchased
by the Italian navy for transporting men of the battalion San Marco,
at first defined fi auxiliary vessel (A5314) and then became ship
for transporting troops.
