Nel tardo pomeriggio di venerdì 9 giugno 2023 un gruppo di quindici persone, probabilmente clandestini, ha sequestrato la nave ro-ro Galata Seaways - della compagnia Dfds -mentre viaggiava al largo di Napoli. La nave era salpata il 7 giugno dal porto turco di Yalova per quello francese di Sete. Secondo quanto riferiscono le Autorità turche, i sequestratori sarebbero stati armati con coltelli, mentre l’equipaggio, formato da ventidue persone, si sarebbe rifugiato nei locali di soggiorno e nella sala macchine. Nel tardo pomeriggio, il ministro italiano della Difesa ha dichiarato che il battaglione San Marco, intervenuto con un elicottero, ha ripreso il controllo della nave. Dopo l’intervento dei militari, che ha fermato tutti i migranti clandestini, la Galata Seaways è approdata al porto di Napoli alle 18.36. La Procura ha quindi avviato un’indagine. La Procuratrice Enrica Parascandolo ha ascoltato il comandante della nave e i quindici migranti, come persone informate dei fatti. Ne è emersa una ricostruzione diversa da quella data all’inizio dal ministro italiano della Difesa ed è nato il dubbio che ci sia stato un sequestro.
Il comandante ha detto di avere visto sulla nave due persone armate di coltello che si aggiravano nell’area della sala macchine, senza entrarvi. Dopo essere stati visti, i due uomini sono tornati nel gruppo, senza avere compiuto alcuna aggressione.
È stato a questo punto che il comandante ha lanciato un allarme e i migranti sono nascosti tra i veicoli imbarcati, per timore per essere rimpatriati. Hanno spiegato che i coltelli erano serviti per tagliare le centine dei camion per nascondersi.
La Procura non ha ipotizzato reati legati al sequestro di persona, al dirottamento o a violenze. L’unica denuncia, per tre persone, è di porto d’armi abusivo. Tredici clandestini sono uomini – di cui due minorenni - e due donne, di cui incinta. Nove sono iracheni, quattro siriani e un iraniano. Quattro di loro sono ricoverati in ospedale per ipotermia e malori.La nave è ripartita per il porto di Sete alle 10.06 del 10 giugno.

In the late afternoon of Friday 9 June 2023, a group of fifteen people, probably illegal immigrants, seized the Galata Seaways ro-ro ship - of the Dfds company - while it was traveling off the coast of Naples. The ship left on 7 June from the Turkish port of Yalova to the French port of Sete. According to what the Turkish authorities report, the kidnappers were armed with knives, while the crew, made up of twenty-two people, took refuge in the living rooms and the engine room. In the late afternoon, the Italian Defense Minister declared that the San Marco battalion, which intervened with a helicopter, regained control of the ship. After the intervention of the military, which stopped all the illegal migrants, the Galata Seaways landed at the port of Naples at 6.36pm. The Prosecutor's Office then launched an investigation. Prosecutor Enrica Parascandolo listened to the captain of the ship and the fifteen migrants, as people informed of the facts. What emerged was a different reconstruction from the one initially given by the Italian Defense Minister and doubts arose that there had been a kidnapping.
The commander said he saw two people armed with knives on the ship wandering around the engine room area, without entering it. After being seen, the two men returned to the group, without having carried out any aggression.
It was at this point that the commander raised an alarm and the migrants hid among the vehicles on board, for fear of being repatriated. They explained that the knives were used to cut the ribs of the trucks to hide.
The Prosecutor's Office has not hypothesized crimes related to kidnapping, hijacking or violence. The only complaint, for three people, is illegal possession of weapons. Thirteen illegal immigrants are men - two of whom are minors - and two women, one of whom is pregnant. Nine are Iraqis, four Syrians and one Iranian. Four of them are hospitalized for hypothermia and illness. The ship left for the port of Sete at 10.06 on 10 June.
