Questa unità era capofile dei cacciatorpediniere Type 42. Fu varato nel giugno 1971 ed entrò in servizio nel mese di febbraio 1975. Queste unità furono progettate per creare una flotta navale per la difesa contro gli attacchi dal cielo. Esse erano dotate di sistemi missilistici Sea Dart terra-aria, e trasportavano un elicottero anti-sommergibile.
Lo SHEFFIELD partecipò alla guerra delle Falkland, il 4 maggio 1982, fu attaccato dagli aerei argentini e fu colpito da un missile Exocet di costruzione francese Super Etendard. Il pilota era il capitano Augusto Bedacarratz, aveva lanciato il suo Exocet a sei miglia dalla Sheffield, e volando al livello del mare il radar non potè intercettarlo finché non fu troppo tardi per reagire. L'equipaggio fu avvertito appena 5 prima dell'impatto. Il sistema radar era vecchio e avrebbe dovuto essere aggiornato per il tipo di sistema 1022. Come nel caso di molte navi della Royal Navy, HMS Sheffield era stato progettato con la guerra fredda ed il radar 965 era in grado di captare gli aerei che volano ad altezze ragionevoli e missili lanciati da un'altezza ragionevole. Il missile causò grossi danni alla nave, che fu colpita 8 piedi sopra la linea di galleggiamento provocando uno squarcio che misurava 4 piedi x 10 piedi. Il motore del del missile ardente danneggiò i sistemi di generazione di energia elettrica della nave che non consentirono ai meccanismi anti-incendio di funzionare in modo efficace. La linea principale di acqua antincendio era stata rotta. La combinazione di mancanza di elettricità e acqua significava che non c'era modo che gli incendi potesserp essere contenuti. Iniziò l'evacuazione per evitare il rischio di altri morti e feriti. La nave fu trainata dalla lontano dalla task force per evtiare che tante navi vicine potessero diventare bersaglio di altri aerei. La nave prima di affondare bruciò per circa sei giorni.
Nell'attacco morirono 24 uomini e molti feriti. HMS Sheffield' è ora una tomba di guerra riconosciuta.

                                  This unit was leader of the Type 42 destroyer. It was launched in June 1971 and entered service in February 1975. These units were designed to create a navy to defend against attacks from the sky. They were equipped with Sea Dart missile system surface-to-air and carrying an anti-submarine helicopter.
Sheffield took part in the Falklands War, 4 May 1982, he was attacked by Argentine aircraft and Exocet missile was shot by a French-built Super Etendard. The pilot was Captain Augusto Bedacarratz, had launched its Exocet six miles from Sheffield, and flying at sea level, the radar could not catch it until it was too late to react. The crew was informed just five before impact. The radar system was old and should have been updated for the type of system 1022. As with many Royal Navy ships, HMS Sheffield was designed with the Cold War and the radar was able to pick up 965 aircraft flying at heights reasonable and missiles launched from a height reasonable. The missile caused great damage to the ship, which was hit 8 feet above the water line causing a gash that measured 4 feet x 10 feet. The engine of the missile systems were weakened burning power generation that did not allow the ship's fire control mechanisms to operate effectively. The main line of fire water had been broken. The combination of lack of electricity and water meant that there was no way that the fires potesserp be contained. He began the evacuation to avoid the risk of other deaths and injuries. The ship was towed away from the task force on evtiare that many ships could become targets of other nearby aircraft. The first ship to sink burned for about six days.
24 men died in the attack and many injured. HMS Sheffield 'is now recognized as a war grave.
