Questa nave è stata costruita
per W. R. Grace & Co., Grazia Linea, New York e nominato nel 1938
SANTA MARIA. Il 09.1940 requisita dalla Marina degli Stati
Uniti per essere utilizzato come trasporto truppe e rinominato USS
BARNETT (AP-11);Il 03.1948 fu acquistata da Achille Lauro per la
Flotta Lauro, Napoli, e ricostruita e, rinominata SURRIENTO;
Furono aumentati gli aloggi per i passeggeri e la capienza fu portata
a 1.952 pax: 119 di prima classe - 999 classe turistica; Nel 1959 fu
ristrutturata a Genova e furono eliminati i due fumaiuoli sostituiti
da uno più moderno. Il 30.09.1966 arrivà La Spezia per
la demolizione.
This ship was
built for W. R. Grace & Co., Grace Line, New York and named in 1938

by US Navy to be used as troopship and renamed USS BARNETT (AP-11);
1946 US Maritime Comission, New York; 03/1948 purchased by Achille Lauro/Flotta
Lauro, Naples, and rebuilt including larger funnels, renamed SURRIENTO;
1952 pax accommodation: 119 first class – 999 tourist class; 1959
rebuilt at Genoa and two funnels were replaced for a modern single funnel;
30/09/1966 arrived La Spezia for breaking up.
