Questa nave fu costruita dai Cantieri
Navali del Quarnaro locati a Fiume, per la Società Costiera
di Navigazione Marittima di Fiume. Fu iscritta al Compartimento
Marittimo di Fiume con matricola 67.
It was originally a small 884 gross passenger boat with a two-stroke and eight-cylinder FIAT diesel engine (366 mm in diameter and 700 mm in length) with a power of 1200-1250 HP.
The launch was named IPPARCO BACCICH in memory of a Rijeka patriot, silver medal for the military valor of the First World War and belonging to a dynasty of 19th century Rijeka shipowners.
Later in the 1930s, following the absorption of the Costiera di Fiume by the Società Anonima di Navigazione Adriatica, the ship was transferred to the Società Fiumana di Navigazione, based in Fiume.
On June 26, 1941, after the entry of Italy in the Second World War, it was requisitioned and registered in the role of the auxiliary Naviglio of the State with mark D 17, and classified auxiliary cruiser, was armed with two 76/40 mm cannons, two 13.2 mm machine guns and as many antisom bombs for depth bombs, its main use was the convoy escort.
On 7 November 1941 in the port of Civitavecchia it collided with the steamer Santa Chiara, remaining damaged.
On 8 September 1943, following the armistice, he sank in the port of La Spezia. The wreck (whose name had been formally changed, in 1944, in LORENZO MARCELLO), in October 1946 was brought back to life and towed to dry dock, where it was subjected to substantial renovation work.
Transformed radically in appearance, after the work was renamed OLBIA, and entered service in 1948 for the company Tirrenia di Navigazione, based in Naples.
After the reconstruction the motorship was modified some structural parameters: gross tonnage of 842.89 tsl, net tonnage of 366.89 tsn, gross capacity of 576 tons and a gross volume of 967 cubic meters. In addition to the passenger accommodations had two holds for 700 cubic meters of capacity.
In 1950 the ship operated a scheduled service on the Genoa-Porto Torres, Genoa-Olbia and Livorno-Olbia-Porto Torres routes. Four years later, in 1954, it was sold to Navisarma Compagnia di Navigazione of Messina, which renamed it PANAREA (registering it with freshman 72 at the Maritime division of Messina) and used it to connect Messina to the Aeolian Islands.
In 1966 it was put into disarmament and was eventually sold for demolition in 1968. Other sources report the demolition as occurred in Savona in October 1966.
