INFORMAZIONI STORICHE

La nave è stata progettata, secondo la formula della I Classe R.O.R.C., da Olin Stephens, uno dei più famosi architetti navali dell’epoca dello studio newyorkese “Sparkman & Stephens”, e costruita nei cantieri Sangermani di Lavagna tra il 1964 e il 1965. Nave Stella Polare è stata varata nel 1965 e consegnata alla Marina Militare Italiana nel 1965.

Il nome Stella Polare rievoca quello della Nave comandata dall'Ammiraglio Luigi di Savoia, Duca degli Abruzzi, e poi dal Capitano di Corvetta Umberto Cagni, che nel 1900 giunse a soli 382 km dal Polo Nord, rispettando in pieno l'augurio che le era stato fatto con l’attribuzione di quel nome .

Nave Stella Polare, varata nel 1965, è la seconda nave a vela della Marina Militare Italiana realizzata interamente in legno e destinata ad essere una scuola per i giovani Ufficiali. Su di essa i giovani militari sviluppano senso di responsabilità, istruzione marinaresca ed attitudine al comando.

I compiti dell’Unità abbracciano essenzialmente tre aspetti fondamentali per la Forza Armata: il primo quello formativo/addestrativo attraverso le campagne estive di istruzione a favore dei giovani allievi, il secondo quello di immagine e rappresentanza con la partecipazione a raduni e competizioni veliche, e per ultimo, ma non per importanza, il “dual use” come strumento di divulgazione della cultura marinara presso i giovani studenti.

Nave Stella Polare ha come sede di dislocazione Livorno ed a partire dal 1° marzo 2014, dipende organicamente ed operativamente, per il tramite del Comando Gruppo Navi a Vela (COMGRUPVELA) ed il Comando Flottiglia Unità Ausiliarie (COMFLOTAUS), dal Comando in Capo della Squadra Navale (CINCNAV).

The ship was designed, according to the formula of the 1st Class RORC, by Olin Stephens, one of the most famous naval architects of the New York studio "Sparkman & Stephens", and built in the Sangermani yards of Lavagna between 1964 and 1965. Nave Stella Polare was launched in 1965 and delivered to the Italian Navy in 1965.

The name Stella Polare recalls that of the Ship commanded by Admiral Luigi di Savoia, Duca degli Abruzzi, and then by the Captain of Corvetta Umberto Cagni, who in 1900 reached only 382 km from the North Pole, fully respecting the wish that was was done with the attribution of that name.

Ship Stella Polare, launched in 1965, is the second sailing ship of the Italian Navy made entirely of wood and destined to be a school for young officers. On it, young military people develop a sense of responsibility, maritime education and an aptitude for leadership.

The tasks of the Unit essentially embrace three fundamental aspects for the Armed Forces: the first one is the training / education through the summer education campaigns in favor of the young students, the second the image and representation with the participation in rallies and sailing competitions, and last but not least, the "dual use" as a tool for disseminating maritime culture among young students.

The Stella Polare ship has its location in Livorno and starting from 1 March 2014, it depends organically and operationally, through the Navi Group Sailing Command (COMGRUPVELA) and the Auxiliary Unit Flotilla Command (COMFLOTAUS), from the Command in Chief of the Naval Team(CINCNAV).
