Nave Ponza, varata nel 1988, è un’Unità tipo Moto Trasporto Fari che prende il nome dell’omonima isola delle isole Ponziane, nel Mar Tirreno. Il suo abituale porto di assegnazione è Ancona. Con decorrenza 14 ottobre 2013 la dipendenza organico/operativa della nave è CINCNAV per il tramite di COMFORDRAG-COMFORAUS e di COMGRUPAUS DUE. La nave viene normalmente impiegata per attività inerenti alla manutenzione ed ammodernamento del segnalamento marittimo costiero necessario a garantire la sicurezza della navigazione nella acque costiere.
A questo scopo, Nave Ponza è dotata di una gru in grado di sollevare fino a 15 tonnellate di peso e di un argano di potenza idoneo a spostare i pesanti massi d’ormeggio dei segnali marittimi ed effettuare così la posa e il recupero di boe, fanali, mede, catenarie, ancore e tralicci.
Tra le altre attività normalmente svolte dalla Nave rientrano anche il supporto alle prove tecniche per le Unità Navali e Sommergibili di nuova costruzione ed il ruolo di Unità appoggio alle esercitazioni dei reparti speciali della Marina Militare.
La Nave è inoltre progettata per fornire supporto logistico e assicurare il rifornimento d’acqua potabile e combustibile ad altre navi o isole, nonché effettuare il trasporto di materiale vario anche nel caso di calamità naturali raggiungendo approdi ove è impossibile giungere via terra grazie al suo ridotto pescaggio. Inoltre, l’Unità è dotata di un piccolo ambulatorio ove fornire una prima assistenza medica a naufraghi o a persone infortunate.
Il suo assetto propulsivo e di governo (vedasi la Scheda Tecnica), conferisce alla nave una buona manovrabilità. Tale requisito è indispensabile per la peculiarità delle operazioni che svolge e la rende, peraltro, idoneo strumento per la formazione degli Ufficiali di Vascello, nell’ambito della sessioni di Scuola Comando Navale e nei Tirocini di Manovra.
A conferma della notevole flessibilità di impiego nei primi anni ’90 l’Unità è stata impiegata per pattugliamenti nelle acque venete e attività di Ricerca e Soccorso. Negli anni 1995/96 è stata impegnata nel trasporto di aiuti umanitari alle popolazioni della Bosnia. Nel Luglio del 2001 l’Unità è stata impiegata a Brindisi e Durazzo per attività operative di pattugliamento e Campagna Fari; attività ripetutasi nel corso dell’estate del 2005 e 2006. Negli anni 2004/05 ha svolto, in concorso con la protezione civile, la Campagna Emergenza Incendi Boschivi nella parte Nord Orientale della Sardegna. L’Unità, inoltre, svolge attività connesse alla formazione dei futuri Comandanti di Navi, quali Scuola Comando Navale e Tirocinio di Manovra per Ufficiali (Tir.M.Uff).

Ponza ship, launched in 1988, is a Unit type Transport Moto Fari named namesake island of the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. His usual assignment port is Ancona. With effect from 14 October 2013 the organic / operational dependency of the ship is CINCNAV out through COMFORDRAG-COMFORAUS and COMGRUPAUS TWO. The ship is normally used for activities related to the maintenance and modernization of the coastal maritime signaling needed to ensure the safety of shipping in coastal waters.
For this purpose, Ponza ship is equipped with a crane capable of lifting up to 15 tons in weight and of a power winch suitable to move the heavy mooring boulders of Signals and thus carry out the laying and recovery of buoys, lights, beacons, chain, anchors and masts.
Among other activities normally carried out by the ship also includes support for technical tests for Unit Naval Submarines of new construction and the role of support units in exercises of special forces of the Navy.
The ship is also designed to provide logistical support and ensure the supply of drinking water and fuel to other ships or islands, as well as perform various material transport even in case of natural disasters reaching landings where it is impossible to reach by land thanks to its light draft. In addition, the unit is equipped with a small clinic where providing first medical assistance to shipwrecked or to accident victims.
Its trim propulsion and government (see the Technical Data Sheet), gives the ship good maneuverability. This requirement is essential to the peculiarities of the operations that takes place and makes it, moreover, suitable instrument for the training of officers-Lieutenant, as part of the sessions of the School Naval Command and in the Maneuver Internships.
In confirmation of the remarkable flexibility of use in the early 90s the unit has been used for patrols in the Venetian waters and activities of Search and Rescue. In the years 1995/96 has been engaged in the transport of humanitarian aid to the populations of Bosnia. In July 2001, the unit was employed in Brindisi and Durres for operational activities of patrolling and Country Lighthouses; ripetutasi activities during the summer of 2005 and 2006. In the years 2004/05 has, in competition with civil protection, Tiles Emergency Forest Fires in the North Eastern part of Sardinia. The unit also carries out activities related to the training of future commanders of ships, such as the School of Naval Command and Internship for Officers Maneuver (Tir.M.Uff).
